Five Under 30: Young Entrepreneurs Reshaping SLO County

The conventional wisdom says you leave the Central Coast to start a company and come back when you can afford to retire. Five people under 30 are proving that wrong — not by ignoring the economics but by building companies that only make sense here.

Kai Yamamoto, 27, runs Swell Logic, a surf-forecasting app that uses ML models trained on Central Coast break patterns. "Every surf app is built by people in Santa Monica," he says. "They optimize for Malibu. I optimize for Morro Bay, where the swell window is completely different." Swell Logic has 14,000 active users and just closed a seed round led by a Paso Robles winery owner who surfs Cayucos every morning.
